Horror Historian
"Horror Historian" is a segment we do on the podcast where we connect movies to real life events. Here is the more laid out story of how we connected the two.

MA
A lonely middle-aged woman befriends some teenagers and decides to let them party in the basement of her home. But there are some house rules: One of the kids has to stay sober, don't curse, and never go upstairs. They must also refer to her as Ma. But as Ma's hospitality starts to curdle into obsession, what began as a teenage dream turns into a terrorizing nightmare, and Ma's place goes from the best place in town to the worst place on Earth.
In a small pink house built with hard work, and great enthusiasm a horrendous murder took place. Claudine Blanchard was stabbed to death by her daughter's "boyfriend" Nicholas Godejohn. You might know this case, and you might be thinking what does this have to do with MA for today's Horror Historian the Gypsy Rose Blanchard case relates to MA more than we thought! In the movie, Ma this middle age women befriend a group of teens finding out right after two of them are children of people she went to high school with. Soon a chain of events will take place that will make you want to wait until you're 21 to drink. (If you aren't already.) In one of the second scenes, we see our main protagonist Maggie struggling to find her way through her new school. When finally out of just being lost she and us as the audience get introduced to Genie an African American handicap girl struggling to get her chair up to the mini ramp in the hallway. Hoping to gain a new friend Maggie helps her out, but after that moment they don't interact again. In fact, we don't see Genie again not until.......Moving forward in the story Maggie meets a group of "cool kids" hangs with them and we meet Ma aka Sue Ann on their adventure to getting an adult to buy them alcohol. I want to skip ahead, by this point in the movie everyone is done with Ma, Maggie thinks something is going on and wants to stay away, and her friends agree. They get numerous messages from Ma after this and then one final video message which she asks them to all meet with her because it was something very serious she had to tell them. Once they all meet up she tells them she has cancer. Knowing what we know about one of the characters, his mother died years ago to the same disease. Of course, her saying this makes them pity her and gets them to party again at her house. But also this meets up made Haley realize what Ma was doing. Which leads to a plot twist no one expected. Maggie and (black) go to Ma's house while she's at work to investigate and figure out the truth. Remember the girl from earlier? Genie? I didn't when watching the movie, so much was happening I completely forgot she was a character. Anyway, she comes back in and guesses what she's walking around. A major shock to Maggie and Haley. Genie was locked away in basically a cell that was her upstairs. She was like a barn animal, and as she explained to the girls how she could walk, and her mother Sue Ann aka Ma was saying how sick she was it dawned on me that Sue Ann is just like Dee Dee or Claudine Blanchard. In the podcast we don't go into it due to spoilers, however here is a different story. If you are unfamiliar with Gypsy Rose case watch the Hulu series "The Act" it'll give you more information and I'll leave links below. Anyhow I will just go into how both Gypsy and Genie were mistreated and brainwashed to think they were sick and needed a wheelchair to walking. Sue Ann was mentally sick, I believe she was just like Dee Dee, she wanted people to feel sorry for her, and she mistreated her daughter because that's all she had. Her husband left her, her boss was annoying and she still lived in the same town that tortured her back in high school. She honestly had nothing going for her and the only person she could control was her daughter. Dee Dee didn't have much either she used her daughter to get free stuff, and money. Both girls locked away from the world until they were able to stand and be free. That the connection for this week's Horror Historian. See you guys later!
